US President Donald Trump has responded to the carnage on Wall St, saying he predicted this and that the United States is going “to boom.

Wall St suffered a massive wipeout as all-out trade war and recession fears alarmed investors.

The United States Dow Jones index has dropped more than 1,680 points - nearly four per cent.

Investors fled from risky assets, seeking the safety of government bonds, after Mr Trump slapped a 10 per cent tariff on most US imports and much higher levies on dozens of other countries.

“I think it’s going very well,” Mr Trump said on Thursday before boarding Air Force One.

“It was an operation, like when a patient gets operated on, and it’s a big thing.

“I said this would be exactly the way it is.”

Mr Trump urged Americans and investors to remember that he has secured around $US6 trillion - $US7 trillion ($9.5 trillion - $11 trillion) through major business investments.

“We’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.

“The markets are going to boom. The stock is going to boom. The country is going to boom.”

Mr Trump lauded the claim that countries across the world wanted to lock in a deal with the United States to avoid his new “Liberation Day” tariffs.

“The rest of the world wants to see, ‘is there anyway they can make a deal’,” he said.

“They’ve taken advantage of us for many, many years.

“For many years we’ve been at the wrong side of the ball and I’ll tell you what, I think it’s going to be unbelievable.

“You’ll see how it’s going to turn out, our country is going to boom.”
