Apprentices and trainees from the South West Institute of Technology will get a chance to test their skills against some of the country’s best at this year’s national Worldskills competition.

Ten people from the South West will represent WA in trades such as bricklaying, cabinet making and hairdressing from September 18 to 20 in Perth.

South West Institute of Technology managing director Duncan Anderson said the number of attendees reflected the high quality of delivery at the institute.

“Those chosen comes down to how they perform on the day under assessment conditions, some have a good day and some have a bad day, ” he said.

“They take confidence and self belief in their abilities from these competitions as well as the skills to go to the next level.

Noovoh employee and restaurant competitor Leisha Young said it was a great opportunity for her to practise her skills and learn from other people.

“It is a good chance to learn new skills and improve the other ones I already know, ” she said.

Training and Workforce Development Minister Kim Hames said each member of Team WA had been recognised as one of the State’s best trade and skill achievers.

“This is a great opportunity that will challenge these young people to achieve their best in their respective trade and skill areas and be recognised for their ability on a national stage, ” he said.

“They are positive career role models for other young people, highlighting the many valuable career opportunities available in the VET sector while also demonstrating the rewards it can bring.”
