The Bunbury Against Coal Export group has vowed to oppose Griffin Coal’s bid to export 15 million tonnes of coal a year from Bunbury.

The group, which is backed by the WA Conservation Council, held its first rally at Koombana Beach which was attended by 60 people.

WA Greens Senator Scott Ludlam was one of the speakers at the rally, raising concerns about the impact of the proposal.

Earlier this year, Griffin Coal was given approval from the State Government to progress its plan to export from Bunbury Port.

The plan includes the construction of a new export terminal and it is expected to double the total tonnage of exports at the port.

Environment Minister Albert Jacob has previously dismissed concerns from environmental groups, saying he was confident the company would abide by world best practice.
