Footy club lodges Kelly Park plans
A plan to redevelop Kelly Park should be seen by Bunbury City Council as a way to revitalise the area, according to a Carey Park Football Club life member.
About four years after the plan was first floated, the club has lodged its business case to the council for a plan to use the sale of a portion of the oval to fund part of the $5.7 million project.
The project includes building a new clubroom, realigning the oval and building houses and a commercial development on the edge of the ground, similar to Waverley Park, in Melbourne.
Ron Bazzo, a life member and the club's historian, backed the development because he said it would bring life to the suburb.
He said Carey Park had stopped growing because new families were heading to new areas of Greater Bunbury, including Dalyellup.
Club committee member Darren Kenny said the redevelopment of the oval was needed to secure the future of the club.
"I honestly believe for the survival of the football club the time has come to change," he said.
However, the sale of the land would leave about $3.3 million that would still need to be funded through State and Federal grants or fundraising.
Mr Kenny and MPM Development Consultant director Andrew McRobert, who developed the business case, spoke at Tuesday night's council meeting about the club's redevelopment.
