Boyanup farmer Dwayne Neill is using grant funding to take sustainable dairy farming to a new level, saving money and improving efficiency at Laurendene Farms.

The milk provider received $11,000 as a part of a share in 13 grants from Lion and Landcare Australia, to upgrade and improve milking infrastructure and equipment.

Mr Neill said the grant would help reduce his costs and be more environmentally friendly.

“The financial benefits are massive and a project like this we couldn’t fund it ourselves, ” he said.

“We are still forking some money out ourselves as well to get it off the ground.

“Anything that is out there to help farmers even at small costs all adds up in the end.”

Lion head of agricultural procurement Murray Jeffrey said Lion was pleased to be investing in its dairy farmers to help improve the sustainability of their operations.

“When it comes to environmental sustainability, Lion takes a partnership approach with our suppliers, ” he said.

“Our grants program with Landcare Australia enables us to provide funding that will help give farmers like Dwayne Neill the tools and resources to address some of the ongoing environmental challenges in dairy industry.

“Through this program we hope to help ensure that our suppliers are well equipped to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations when it comes to reducing energy consumption, improving nutrient management or increasing on-farm biodiversity.”
