A national radio star has been suddenly axed, revealing live to listeners that they would not return the next day.

The Night Shift on Triple M, hosted by Luke Bona, has come to an abrupt end, with the team revealing on Thursday that they were preparing for their final show.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share the Night Shift will be coming to a close this week, but management has graciously given us the chance for one last hurrah,” the team said on Facebook.

“For the last time from midnight ‘til sparrow’s fart across seventy-something transmitters, we will do our best to entertain and keep you company.”

The farewell note was signed by host Bona and long-time producer Thomas Denham.

The sudden departure was panned by fans online.

Tech Expect Trevor Long said: “This is without question the dumbest decision made in radio for a long long time, and trust me, I’ve seen a lot of them.”

“Luke and Thomas you are to be congratulated on having created something unique, something special and something that is unmatched today, and wont’ be repeated.

“I will miss our chats. Love you guys, and the night shift family.”

One fan suggested that an executive needed to be sacked over the axing.

“Who ever made this decision should be sacked what a joke,” they wrote Denon Facebook.

“The last reason I listened to Triple M. No reason to listen to them anymore,” vented another.

Thanking fans for their support, Bona said: “The support Thomas and I have received today has been overwhelming, how lucky am I for this family!”
