The Wiggles slap The City of Bunbury with music ban over homelessness row

The Wiggles have banned The City of Bunbury from playing their music in public after becoming embroiled in a homelessness row. The beloved Australian children’s music group made the intervention today after it was revealed their music has been played on loop to deter homeless people from congregating. The entertainers made their stand after it was revealed their classic hit Hot Potato is sounded on a loop around The Graham Bricknell Music Shell area in a bid to drive the homeless away. The entertainers approached the City after learning what their music was being used for. After getting in contact with the city, the singers told The West Australian in a statement: “The Wiggles’ music is created to bring joy and happiness to children and families around the world, and we are deeply disappointed to hear that it is being used in any other way.” The stars inadvertently became embroiled in the row after Bunbury mayor Jaysen Miguel addressed the situation. “The City of Bunbury has been running music on and off there for the past six months, as happens across Australia and across the world where you can have music in certain areas to deter antisocial behaviours,” Miguel said. “But ... there has been a known problem where people are getting in and turning the music up to full bore.” The song was still playing on loop hours after the furore erupted on Thursday morning. Following The Wiggles’ statement, Mr Miguel said he had not “seen anything from the Wiggles asking us to stop playing the music apart from your website”. But he said: “The music will be going off ... it would be off now if I had it my way.” “I want to make it clear the music was not about moving on homeless people but stopping anti-social behaviour. “There’s a need to work with local communities and with the State Government on the issue.” Homelessness Minister John Carey blasted the City’s move and called on the local government to work with the State constructively to help rough sleepers. “This is not a constructive way to assist the most vulnerable members of our community,” Mr Carey said. “Many local governments work proactively with the State and look at ways and measures to transition people out of rough sleeping. “All tiers of government – that’s local, state and federal – have a responsibility when it comes to an issue as complex as homelessness.” The city has used the tactic before to deter vandals and homeless people gathering near the waterside location. During the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the City blasted Peter Allen’s I Go to Rio from the music shell. Bunbury MLA and Disability Services Minister Don Punch on Thursday said it was “inappropriate” for the City to use music to stop homeless people from using the facility and proven deterrent. “The fact that people are sleeping over at the Graham Bricknell shell means that we have to review what the services are doing and how we can improve them to ensure that people are getting the appropriate services,” he said. “I am very disappointed that the music is being played and very disappointed that the issue hasn’t come up earlier so that we can take the appropriate action to try and address it. “But playing music 24 hours a day is not a solution to homelessness.” Sharing the Wiggles outrage at the approach, homeless cafe provider Intown Centre said the tactic was “harsh” and the City “needed a better response”. Intown Centre chair David Bailey was surprised at the council being responsible for the music. “In the last couple of days, I have been walking around and I have heard it, but I did not think it was the council. I thought it was someone with a CD player,” he said. “It did strike me as odd. It is harsh . . . (and) there needs to be a better response.” Mr Bailey said it was difficult to find a solution to issues at the site. “People have found that the shell is relatively safe and it is central, so that’s why people congregate there,” he said. “What needs to be done is all stakeholders, not just the council, need to come together and try to address things as soon as possible.” Mr Carey said the State had invested $225 million in funding to address homelessness this financial year ,and that the supportive landlord model, Djuripiny Mia program, was delivering 100 homes for rough sleepers, across the Perth, Peel and Bunbury areas. “As part of the pilot program, to date, 17 properties have been added to Bunbury and its surrounds and are supporting 34 individuals,” he said.
