Emily Goldsmith has her own indoor plant pests business

The purchase of an indoor plant gave Emily Goldsmith a business idea. THE JOB As the Founder and Co-Director of uBloomd, I lead an indoor plant pest company that takes pride in creating innovative solutions for plant lovers. Our flagship (the hero or most important) product is the very first green sticky trap designed specifically for green indoor plants, effectively tackling indoor plant pests. I have a lot of responsibilities in this role, ranging from product development and creation to providing excellent customer service through email correspondence. Additionally, I manage our social media presence and handle product photography to showcase our offerings effectively. I also take a hands-on approach where I am actively involved in managing finance, logistics and even oversee the entire process of picking, packing and shipping products to our valued customers. I am also responsible for the success of the company, which means I need to constantly upskill and learn about every aspect of the business to improve and drive its growth. THE PATH This unique job didn’t come through a typical application process. It all began during lockdown when I purchased my first indoor plant and noticed small black flies infesting my room. I soon realised they were fungus gnats breeding in the moist soil. Determined to solve the problem, I delved into extensive research on these insects. After trying various solutions like sprays, soil toppers and traps without success, I decided to create my own product. I invested six months of hard work, learning about online business and refining my product concept. Utilising my knowledge of certain chemicals and finding natural alternatives, I developed and manufactured the first green trap, blending it seamlessly into the plant while using a scent to attract adult flying pests. With scientific backing and positive feedback from friends, I introduced my innovative product to the market. That’s how I landed in this extraordinary job – an unexpected journey that started with a personal problem and evolved into a successful solution for others facing a similar issue. THE GOOD There are plenty of benefits to my job. Firstly, the flexibility to set my own work hours allows me to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Whether I need a day off or a weekend getaway, I have the freedom to schedule my work accordingly. I can work on any task or implement any growth or creative strategy without asking others for permission. I get to meet and interact with other incredible business owners and learn about every aspect of the business. And I get to help Aussie plant parents with their plant pest problems every day! Knowing that our product makes a positive impact in their lives brings immense satisfaction and makes this job truly wonderful. THE BAD I have a never-ending to-do list. If the task needs to be done, I have to do it. I work by myself most days, sitting in my office and just getting the jobs done. Once they’re all done, I can enjoy the rest of the day. I don’t get paid per hour; I get a flat rate which is relatively small, and I put a lot of pressure on myself to grow my business. I know it can be a market leader and it’s my job to get it there, no matter how much work I need to do to get it there! THE FUTURE The future of my job is entirely dependent on how much I can think creatively and grow the business. uBloomd has the potential to be huge. It could be a global success if we work with the right people and implement the right strategies. It’s my responsibility to find those strategies, implement them and then share them with our customers and market.
