Schoolies are drinking less than ever before
More schoolies are opting to enjoy alcohol-free days over drunken adventures during their end of school celebrations, according to new research.
The latest DrinkWise research revealed that nine in 10 schoolies surveyed engaged in activities that didn’t involve alcohol last year, with one-third of attendees choosing to exercise with friends.
DrinkWise chief executive Simon Strahan said the latest research highlighted a shift in behaviour among young people who were actively moving away from risky drinking.
“We know how hard year 12 students have worked throughout the year and how they view Schoolies Week celebrations as an important reward for their efforts,” Mr Strahan said.
“While we want them to have a great time, moderation for those drinking and safety for all remains the priority.”
The Alcohol at Schoolies survey also found 71 per cent of 2023 schoolies had enjoyed days at the beach alcohol-free.
Meanwhile, 62 per cent of 2023 schoolies opted to not drink alcohol when they were dining at a restaurant and 29 per cent of attendees consumed zero alcohol drinks.
Mr Strahan said it was encouraging to see younger people prioritising making healthier choices when celebrating, but he warned there were still plenty of things people could do to limit their alcohol consumption.
“It’s great to see attendees are prioritising alcohol-free activities like exercising, going to the beach and dining at restaurants, but 26 per cent of Schoolies attendees are still choosing to drink every day and 14 per cent are regretting their actions due to excessive alcohol consumption,” he said.
“In addition to this, our research has also found that 20 per cent were drinking more after attending Schoolies, which is why our moderation messaging is so important.
“To help continue shifting attitudes during this year’s Schoolies celebrations and encourage responsible alcohol consumption, DrinkWise Schoolies Survival Tips campaign will be seen in over 700 retail stores in Schoolies hotspots around the country.”
DrinkWise will feature targeted safety messaging at retail locations operated by Endeavour, Coles Liquor, IGA Liquor and Retail Drinks Australia member stores at popular Schoolies destinations across the country.
Schoolies officially kicks off on Saturday, with end of school leavers expected to descend on Rottnest Island, Surfers Paradise, the Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, Rosebud, Victor Harbor, Dunsborough, Phillip Island and Lorne.
Through the Schoolies Survival Tips campaign, these reminders will reach schoolies before and during drinking occasions, encouraging them to moderate their intake, pace themselves and look out for their friends.
