Australian man on Kokoda Track pronounced dead after collapsing at the Papua New Guinea trail

An Australian man has died after collapsing while walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

The cause of the 48-year-old’s death is unclear but The West Australian understands the man fainted on the track and those with him attempted CPR.

He was pronounced dead at the Pacific International Hospital in Port Moresby on Sunday night.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said it was providing consular assistance to the family.

“DFAT is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Papua New Guinea,” the spokeperson said.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family.”

The Owen Stanley Range is home to the Kokoda Track where 400 Australian soldiers and their New Guinean porters defeated 25,000 Japanese marines during World War II.

Today it is a war pilgrimage destination that attracts 3000 Australian tourists every year.

The trail is a single-file footpath that runs 96km with distances ranging from 12-19km a day over steep mountainous terrain through tropical rainforest.
