Six-goal Re leads Bulldogs charge

LINCOLN BERTELLIBunbury Herald

Bunbury took top spot in the South West Football League after a comfortable 45-point win over Donnybrook on Sunday.

Leading goal kicker Marc Re was dominant and added another six to his personal total in Bunbury’s 14.18 (102) to 8.9 (57) success at Payne Park.

Donnybrook remained competitive throughout but never genuinely looked like winning, despite the Bulldogs missing a host of chances.

Bunbury spent most of the first quarter camped in their attacking half but kicked four points before scoring their first goal.

The visitors’ first real attack resulted in a goal, with the lively Jason Brennan marking well before setting up the first of Hayden King’s two goals for the afternoon.

A booming kick from Jordan Adamson-Holmes allowed Re to mark strongly and kick a replying goal and that forward line combination proved Donnybrook’s nemesis throughout.

Jesse and Trent Gribble also controlled the midfield for Bunbury and both worked hard all game.

Re added another two quick goals after quarter time and the margin threatened to blow out before Donnybrook added extra numbers in defence and started repelling plenty of would-be attacks from half-back.

Bunbury put the game beyond doubt by kicking the only four goals of the third quarter but they still struggled to play with genuine fluidity.

Donnybrook’s Todd Gregory added a highlight in the final term with an exceptional checkside goal from deep in the pocket after a contentious mark was paid near the boundary line.

Pleasing for the visitors was the fact they outscored Bunbury in the last quarter and did not allow the unbeaten Bulldogs to kick away.

Inaccurate Bunbury goal kicking stopped the margin from being even greater, with Jesse Gribble (1.4) and Adamson-Holmes (1.3) among the culprits.

Both were among their team’s best players though and it was hard to find much to criticise from an effective and professional team performance.

The win means the Bulldogs remain the only perfect side in the competition after the Eaton Boomers split round seven honours with South Bunbury.
