Royal Flying Doctor Service partners with Regional Health Professionals Network to boost rural healthcare

The Royal Flying Doctor Service WA has taken a significant step in bolstering health care delivery in rural and remote communities by partnering with the Regional Health Professionals Network program. The collaboration between RFDS and three regional HPNs aims to enhance support for health professionals working in under-served areas and improve patient outcomes. Rural Health West general manager of education and engagement Leesa Thomas hailed the partnership as a milestone for the HPN program, which connects health care providers across country WA. “Having RFDS on board as a partner is a significant milestone for the growth and expansion of the HPN program,” Ms Thomas said. “Most of the major employers of health professionals across country WA are now partners in the HPN program, which means we can have a truly collaborative and collegiate approach to how we better support our rural clinicians. “This initiative is not just about supporting health professionals — it’s about improving the health and wellbeing of rural communities. “By strengthening connections between professionals and fostering collaboration, the program ensures that communities benefit from comprehensive and cohesive care delivered by teams equipped to meet their needs.” The HPN program focuses on connecting health professionals through social and educational initiatives, building multidisciplinary care teams that enhance patient outcomes. A recent survey found 8 per cent of HPN members experienced greater professional support through their involvement, while two-thirds reported improved referral pathways benefiting patients. RFDS general manager aeromedical Kieran Hennelly emphasised the role of the HPN program in addressing professional isolation — a common challenge for rural clinicians. “The HPN program will help RFDS crew members build both a professional support network and community connections,” Dr Hennelly said. “If RFDS staff and their families feel embedded in a community, that helps with recruitment and retention, resulting in better health outcomes for rural and remote communities.” As part of the partnership, RFDS bases in Broome, Port Hedland, and Kalgoorlie-Boulder will host HPN activities, including tours of facilities and aircraft to familiarise rural health professionals with the service’s operations. The HPN program is a collaborative initiative supported by Statewide and regional partners, including Rural Health West, the WA Country Health Service, WA Primary Health Alliance, St John WA, and several universities.
