Cassius Turvey murder trial: Prison phone call between Jack Brearley and Aleesha Gilmore played in court

Prison phone calls between two of Cassius Turvey’s alleged killers in which one repeatedly tried to convince the other to persuade a witness to change her statement have been played in court. The recordings between Jack Brearley and his now ex-girlfriend Aleesha Gilmore were made between November 2022 and January 2023. Mr Brearley was the first of four people to be arrested in connection with the attack on the 15-year-old who died from bleeding on the brain ten days after he was hit on the head with a shopping trolley pole in October 2022. He, along with Ms Gilmore, Brodie Palmer and Mitchell Forth, has been on trial in the WA Supreme Court for the past six weeks, accused of murdering the Indigenous teenager. In the phone calls, Mr Brearley tells Ms Gilmore that he’s “never going to get outta here” because of a statement her mother gave to police in which she claimed he told her that he “hit a kid with a trolley pole”. “I’m pretty much only in here because of your mum,” Mr Brearley says to Ms Gilmore in one of the calls. “Have fun living with that for the rest of your life. “If I get charged with murder, you know that’s a life sentence.” In another phone call, Mr Brearley again complains to Ms Gilmore about missing “out of the rest of my life” and blames her family for his predicament. “Your little brother started it,” Mr Brearley said in the phone call. “What’s good about your family f….ng nothing.” Ms Gilmore then replies that she’s sorry and that there was nothing she could really do. “Your mum wrote a f…..g statement on me,” Mr Brearley says back. “Hope you’re happy with her, she’s ruined my life. “It’s a bit hard to be positive about this when I shouldn’t even be in jail. “That’s all they have on me. If I get sentenced, she has a death wish. If I ever told my uncle about that shit she would be in the boot c…” In a phone call between the pair in January 2023, Mr Brearley then asks Ms Gilmore to get her mum to change her statement. “Take your mum to homicide squad then,” Mr Brearley says. “It’s not f…..g hard. That’s the only evidence they have. “If she goes there…. it will get withdrawed. Whatever. You obviously don’t wanna help me just wanna see me in jail for rest of life. “Your whole family put me in here, it’s their whole f…..g fault. “I’m going to get sentenced for something I didn’t even do because your mum is a junkie f…..g whore.” And in the last phone call between the pair that was played to the court, Mr Brearley begged Ms Gilmore to try to get her mum to withdraw her statement again. “Can you try for me, please,” Mr Brearley says in the prison phone call. “Just talk to her after and go see if you can take her there. That’s the only thing that’s holding me here. “All other statements are bullshit. That’s the only one, why do you think no one else is in jail?” Earlier, messages between Ms Gilmore’s phone to a person named “Brodie” were also shown in court. In the exchanges, the person says to “Brodie” that “Jack” had been arrested and they needed a lawyer. “Oi. Cops got Jack for that thing and asked if you could get in touch with that lawyer. We have lied and said it’s not us, must have been other people chasing them too as they seen us chase them,” the message from Ms Gilmore’s phone says. “Cheers for tonight, couldn’t thank you enough.” “Brodie” responded: “So, they want anything with me?” “They’ve got you too,” the message from Ms Gilmore’s phone replies back. “Yeah, but what for?” Brodie asked back. “Just driving,” the message on Ms Gilmore’s phone says. “Wow, driving hahaha,” Brodie replied.
