Members of Speed Torque team win medals, score PBs as they impress at State Little Athletics Championships

Athletes from the Speed Torque athletics team impressed at the State Little Athletics Championships in Perth over the weekend, picking up an impressive count of medals and personal bests. Faelyn Smith had a day out in the boys’ under-13s division, collecting a silver medal in javelin with a personal best throw of 34.04m as well as personal bests in discus with a throw of 34.23m and 200m hurdles with a time of 30.65 seconds, finishing his day with a 10.12m triple jump. Bonny Dean starred in the under-13s girls’ 1500m walk with a personal best and threw a ninth-place finish in the javelin. Under-11s Jimmy Kowalski recorded a ninth place in the boys’ high jump, chalked up a long jump distance of 4.10m, a personal best in the 80m hurdles with a time of 14.61 seconds and finished seventh in triple jump with a jump of 8.96m. Myla Hurst shone bright in the under-11s girls’ divisions with a personal best in the 800m with a time of 2.45min, a 5.31min personal best in the 1500m and a 1.16min run in the 400m. Under-10 competitor Ari Lawrence recorded a 100m personal best time of 14.96sec, fourth in the 70m with a personal best time of 11.05sec and fourth in javelin with a throw of 21.46m. Aria Halo-Poi claimed a silver medal in the under-nine girls’ 100m final with a personal best time of 15.02sec, with another personal best time in the 200m final with a time of 32.46sec. Fellow under-nine competitor Cruz Dowers recorded a shot put throw of 5.48m in the boys’ division, a personal best placing of sixth in javelin and another personal best sixth-placing finish in discus. Coach Jacko Whitby said it was a great first outing for his athletes. “What a fantastic State championship, a first for Jimmy Kowalski, Myla Hurst, Cruz Dowers and Aria Halo-Poi,” he said. “It was also pleasing to see personal bests across the board. “Faelyn Smith will continue to train in preparation for the junior national titles next week, showing promising signs leading up to the event.”
