What I See with Peter Fiorenza: My dogs’ love of our new home proves the big move was the right decision

I’ve now been in my new place for a couple of months. And so far, so good. What I mean is I’ve settled in, but so have my dogs Billie and Joel. When I decided to move house, I knew it would be a big change for me after living in the same house for the past 20-plus years, but it was my little family I was somewhat concerned about. Despite moving across town and into a new, very different, abode, my border collies didn’t miss a beat. It was like they had been living there all their lives. This was more than heartening for me. In fact, it was the icing on the cake. Initially I bought my new home as an investment, but after talking to friends I was convinced that moving into the house myself was a good idea. I knew from the moment I stepped into the heritage cottage it had me written all over it. I know this sounds a bit soppy, but I literally fell in love with it. For some reason, I felt overwhelmingly happy and content, and this is still happening when I come home from work and open the vintage front door. So, without doubt, Billie and Joel feel the same way — they reacted as though they had been living there the whole time. My bubbas almost immediately started to lounge around and wander in and out of the place at will. And the cottage-style garden was simply “heaven-sent” for dogs that like outside adventure. Now, before I get too carried away, it hasn’t been all clear sailing. I do need to replace more bed linen; I have a hole near my front gate that would rival the Mariana Trench, and I think I have few less potted plants on the front porch than when I moved in. And I’ve now realised that leaving the door to the study open while I’m not home is a not a good move. Despite this, though, life in the new Fiorenza household is sweet as. And the late night and early morning cuddles from my furry friends only further crystallises that “home is where the heart is”.
