Young Motors Women’s T20 cricket league round eight wrap: Sportsmans and Wanderers triumph

A bright opening stand between Jess Wake and Stacey Jerrard set up Sporties’ win over Towns in Sunday’s Young Motors Women’s T20 cricket. Wake (23) and Jerrard (14) put on 41 in seven overs at the Rec before being parted by Janelle Phillips who bowled Jerrard. Wake followed next over when bowled by Ruth Vorster (3-6). Amanda Gundry (18) was also positive before she fell to Rebekah MacLachlan (2-6 off four overs) and Sporties finished at 6-79. Towns, with opener and captain Vorster finding gaps, had a chance to record an upset win but kept losing wickets with good bowling from Isabelle MacPherson (2-13) while two run outs didn’t help. Jo Walker (2-8) made the crucial breakthrough when she bowled Vorster. Young Addison Phillips did well to survive for 18 balls before being bowled by MacPherson of the last ball of the 20th over while her mum Janelle was unbeaten on 11. Wanderers defeated Chapman Valley-Northampton at GBSC Park in a game that featured the welcome return of Meg Spalding. Wanderers was sent into bat and dismissed for 92, a fine effort by CVN’s bowlers even though four of the wickets were retired and technically not dismissed. Spalding (29 off 15 balls) was one of the retirees along with Olivia Bidwell (21). Alexia Wekwerth (3-19), a find for CVN this season, was pick of the bowlers and Chloe Phillips (2-9) also shone. CVN slumped to 5-17 in the chase but rallied through Kylie Bremner (18) and Kate Clarkson (14 not out) to get through their 20 overs and end at 9-54. Kasey Maynard (3-13) and Abby Green (2-4) had the best figures.
