The 25m lap pool at the Leschenault Leisure Centre has finally reopened after repair works were unexpectedly blown out to more than four months when a huge crack was found in its concrete lining.

The popular Australind facility was originally closed to the public on October 31 last year for repairs due to a number of missing and displaced tiles and scheduled to reopen to the public on February 27.

However, the date had to be pushed back after an 8m-long crack was found in the pool’s concrete lining, which was believed to have been caused by a different rate of concrete shrinkage between thicker and thinner parts of the shell.

It caused a budget spillover, with the $110,473 repair bill for the pool — which last had repair work undertaken in 2009 — blowing costs out by more than $30,000 than budgeted.

To fix the crack, a waterproof membrane was layered on the entire concrete shell during the Christmas break, with tiling completed in early February and the pool being refilled in the first week of March.

Following the all-clear from water samples provided to the WA Department of Health for testing, and other work to get the pool back up to scratch, it was on Monday reopened.

Harvey Shire president Paul Gillett said he was excited to reopen the doors and eager to welcome back swimmers.

“The LLC lap pool closure has been a lengthy project,” he said.

“However, it is fantastic to see our popular lap pool back and better than ever.”

The Shire thanked the community and local swimming clubs for their patience and understanding during the work, which took place over the usually busy summer period.

Swim school and holiday swim week programs will open to enrolments on March 27, with the first classes starting in April.
