Cadets learn life skills

Youths aged 11 to 16 have the opportunity to build firefighting and life skills in an upcoming course to be run by the Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade.

The brigade’s cadet coordinator Naomi Dekker said the course was returning after a couple of years’ absence.

“We’re looking for kids between those ages to come along and learn something fun and potentially lifesaving,” she said.

Training will include basic firefighting and how to use the equipment and appliances.

“Through that learning, cadets will also learn about team building, personal development and we’ll have plenty of fun activities,” Miss Dekker said.

She was looking forward to investing in the future of the brigade.

“It is something worthwhile to do,” she said.

“If cadets follow through and become full firefighters, they will be helping their community and making friends for life.”

Miss Dekker has been a member of the Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade for two years.

“When the idea was brought forward about the cadet course, I volunteered because I like helping out,” she said.

There is no finalised date for when the course would start but the brigade is aiming for May or June.
