Salvos appeal for volunteers

LESLEE HALLBunbury Herald

Each year, the Salvation Army $50 helps more than one million people in crisis, but needs volunteers for its biggest annual fundraiser to continue to do so.

On May 25 and 26 more than 100,000 volunteers — including 500 in the Bunbury area — are needed to knock on doors and man booths at shopping centres as part of the Red Shield Appeal.

Salvation Army Bunbury Major Trevor Wilson urged service groups, businesses, schools and the general public to participate in the campaign, whether by volunteering their time or holding their own fundraiser.

He said the appeal would be particularly visible in shopping centres this year as less people were home on the weekend due to work, sporting commitments and Sunday trading.

“Even if people miss us in the shopping centres or aren’t home, they can go online and donate,” Major Wilson said.

Red Shield Appeal Bunbury City chairwoman, Forrest MHR Nola Marino, said no matter how much time people had to volunteer, there was a way to participate.

“If you could come along and put in a couple of hours outside any of the shopping centres around the South West, that would be a fabulous help to us,” she said.

“In this region, it is widely recognised and respected so you do enjoy your time as a volunteer involved in this organisation.”
