Scouts celebrate

Bunbury Herald

Five Venturers will tonight become the first members of the new Carey Park Scouts Group to be inducted as Rovers and it all happens on Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powells’ birthday.

Few Scout Venturers stay onto link with Rovers, the organisation’s section for 18 to 26-year-olds, but after seven years’ experience under her belt, soon-to-be Rover Michelle Runbold said there was plenty on offer for her to remain a passionate participant.

The 18-year-old has applied to receive her Queen’s Scout Badge, one of the organisation’smore prestigious awards.

‘‘When people employ you they look at your resume and if you have earned your Queen’s, the person with a Queen’s is more likely to get the job,’’ Ms Runbold said.

Also making the move up tonight, Colin Worthington said six years of scouting had broadened his horizons.

‘‘Scouting allows you to do so much more than you would be able to do without it — the type of activities you do in Scouting are very different from anything else you do,’’ the 18-year-old said.

Carey Park Scout Leader Viv Campbell said February 22 was known among Scouts as Founder’s Day and was chosen to mark what was a rare occasion.

‘‘Things tend to get complicated for young people about 18 years old, they tend to move around and move away possibly but I’m really pleased that this group have stuck together and decided to make the move to Rovers,’’ Mrs Campbell said.
