Sophie's dream comes true

Bunbury Herald

The past few months have been tough for eight-year-old Bunbury girl Sophie Read who was confined to a wheelchair when her ankles began “crumbling”.

But on Friday the Regional Telethon Star was able to live her dream of being a ballerina with the help WA of Ballet dancers, in town to perform Romeo and Juliet.

Sophie has juvenile arthritis and was recently diagnosed with avascular necrosis, which means her bones are dying because they are not receiving a blood supply.

She faces the daily challenge of pain throughout her body but dreams of one day dancing like her older sister, Monique.

Mum Aydee Edwards said meeting WA Ballet dancers at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre had been a special experience.

“Before Telethon last year her right ankle was crumbling but now it is her left ankle too and although she is out of a cast she was not supposed to run, jump or dance except for this special occasion which PMH said was OK,” she said.

The Romeo and Juliet cast gave Sophie a ballerina make-over, including hair, make-up and costume and presented her with a signed a pair of pointe shoes.

Sophie and fellow Telethon star Conor Brown will host a Telethon fundraising Masquerade Ball at the Bunbury Powerboat Club on September 7.
