Walkers on path to fitness, prizes

Bunbury Herald

The Bunbury City Council and the Heart Foundation are encouraging commuters to Find 30 by walking to and from work.

As added motivation, the council is offering people the chance to win gym membership vouchers and a $300 voucher for a bike.

Those interested in participating are encouraged to put a Walkit Bunbury sticker on their car, park it in either the council’s Ocean Drive or Anchorage Bay carparks, then walk to work.

If a ranger sees a car with a sticker they will leave a competition entry form on its windscreen, putting the healthy commuter one step closer to winning a prize.

The competition is part of the Walk-it Bunbury initiative which encourages the people of Bunbury to walk rather than drive.

City parking coordinator Neil Dyer said the council supported healthy communities and lifestyles.

“This competition promotes both of those things,” he said.

“By getting people to park further away, they can improve their health on the way to work.”

Mr Dyer said the competition was aimed at people who worked in the CBD and parked nearby, however anyone could get involved.

“Another benefit of encouraging workers to park further away is that it frees up parking in the CBD for those who are just visiting and shopping,” he said.

The council is happy for anyone to take advantage of the free car parks that are located on the edge of the CBD.

The Walk-it stickers are available from the Bunbury City Council administration on Stephen Street.
