Kanye West’s online store shut down after t-shirt with nazi symbol was listed for sale
American rapper Kanye West has had his online store shut down on Tuesday after it listed a t-shirt with a swastika for sale.
The rapper, who now goes by Ye, had his store shut down by the online retail platform Shopify.com soon after the item was publicised.
According to a statement to the New York Times by a Shopify spokesperson, West’s site “did not engage in authentic commerce practices and violated our terms so we removed them from Shopify”.
Screenshots of the website on web archiving sites shows the store was selling a white t-shirt with a black swastika on the chest area for $US20.
The website now shows a message reading “something went wrong” and “this store is unavailable”.
Just days earlier an ad played in Los Angeles television during the Superbowl featured West seemingly at the dentist where he directed the audience to his online shop but made no mention of the anti-Semitic merchandise.
The move drew swift rebuke from the Anti-Defamation League who wrote in a statement on X the action was another example of anti-Semitism.
“As if we needed further proof of Kanye’s antisemitism, he chose to put a single item for sale on his website – a t-shirt emblazoned with a swastika,” they wrote.
“The swastika is the symbol adopted by Hitler as the primary emblem of the nazis.
“It galvanized his followers in the 20th century and continues to threaten and instil fear in those targeted by anti-Semitism and white supremacy.”
The controversy comes days after West posted to his now deactivated X account an admission that he was a nazi along with posts idolising Adolf Hitler such as calling him “so fresh”.
The posts were also condemned for their anti-Semitic messaging.
