Labor’s Canning candidate Jarrad Goold starts Federal campaign with $4m pledge for Mandurah rec centre

Labor’s candidate Jarrad Goold has started his Federal campaign with a $4 million pledge for the Mandurah rec centre. The State prosecutor is taking on incumbent Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie in the 2025 Federal election for the Canning electorate, which covers Waroona, Mandurah, Murray, Serpentine-Jarrahdale and part of Rockingham. The seat has been in Liberal hands since 2001 and for most of the time since its creation in 1949. Mr Hastie won in a by-election in 2015 after the death of former member Don Randall. In 2022 he was re-elected with a 3.6 per cent margin. Mr Goold grew up in Mandurah, attended the University of Notre Dame, where he led the student Labor club, and has been working as a lawyer for more than a decade. Gearing up for the election, Mr Goold announced last week a re-elected Albanese Labor Government would deliver $4m for a court expansion at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre. The commitment would go towards the construction of three more indoor multi-use courts, along with seating, changerooms, an office and umpires’ room, a medical room and a community meeting space. Mr Goold said the Mandurah Basketball Association was turning children and families away due to a lack of facilities. The Harvey region is in the Forrest electorate, where Labor are yet to put up a candidate. Currently competing for the region is Liberal Ben Small and independent Voices for Forrest candidate Sue Chapman, with long-term Liberal member Nola Marino stepping down.
