The waste not, want not philosophy will be on show in Waroona as the regional shire gets set to host a series of sustainability workshops.

The Shire of Waroona have invited Robyn Brown, from Waste is My Resource, to teach the community new ways to reduce waste in their daily lives with the support of the State Government and Waste Authority.

Ms Brown is running a series of workshops next month at the Waroona Memorial Hall and Preston Beach Community Centre, diving into composting and worm farming, growing an edible garden and making beeswax wraps.

She was looking forward to hosting the six workshops over the month, and hopes to see as many community members as possible in attendance.

“My whole aim, my vision, is to help people reduce waste, and all these things are going to help do it,” Ms Brown said.

Ms Brown said the beeswax workshop will be especially interesting, showing off how to make a simple alternative to single use plastic wraps.

“People in the past, I think, thought this was a very specialist thing, but me being a teacher, I always pull things apart to work out how to do it, and it’s very simple and very low cost,” she said.

Ms Brown said she was also keen to dive into the composting side of things, and show people how easy it can be to make a great soil conditioner from waste products.

“I like to show people that it’s not a chore, there are simple steps, and there’s only a couple of things that go wrong which are always flexible,” she said.

“Even if you’ve done composting before, if you have an issue, I can usually help solve it.”

Composting workshops will run in the Waroona hall on April 15 from 10am to 1.30pm and at Preston Beach on April 22 from 10.30am to 2pm.

The edible garden workshops will run in the Waroona hall on April 17 from 10am to 11.30am and at Preston Beach on April 24 from 10am to 11.30am.

The beeswax workshops run in the Waroona hall on April 19 from 10am to 11.30pm and at Preston Beach on April 27 from 10am to 11.30pm with limited spaces able to be booked by contacting the team via email at techofficer@waroona.wa.gov.au
