... and all that jazz

Bunbury Herald

The sweet sound of jazz music filled the Australind Senior High School performing arts theatre on Thursday with renowned musician John Morrison paying a visit.

The jazz workshops gave students the chance to jam with Mr Morrison and hear stories from his musical journey.

Music teacher Andrew Mackay Sim said the students really enjoyed the experience.

‘‘The jazz band got to spend two hours with him and they all had an absolute blast,’’ Mr Mackay-Sim said.

‘‘He has been playing drums with them and getting them to dance and he is just a great motivator.’’

Mr Mackay-Sim said the students got great benefit out of Mr Morrison’s workshops.

‘‘He is giving the students inspiration about the joy of playing music,’’ he said.

‘‘He talked about bringing energy to the music people play.’’

Students from Aranmore Catholic College in Perth also got involved in the action and shared in Mr Morrison’s wisdom.

In 2013, Australind Senior High School will add the jazz music programs to their growing list of specialist subjects.

Mr Mackay-Sim said preparations are already in full swing for the program that will be offered for students in Years 8 to 12.
