Artists and writers from Edith Cowan University put their beloved pieces on show last week for the 2014 ECU South West Undergraduate Art and Writing Competition.

This year’s competition was the most successful yet, with 50 artists and writers entering work to be scrutinised by the judges.

Organiser Robyn Mundy said it was the strongest competition yet.

“It was the third year of the competition running and we have some strong emerging talent, ” she said.

The winner of the art section was Andrea Schell with her painting Self Portrait.

The painter said she created the piece in the bathroom with a spotlight for more harsh light.

“I usually paint a lot smaller than this, ” she said.

“I also draw more – I haven’t painted much.”

The winner of the writing section was Leslie Thiele who wrote a short story called The Slaughterman, which considers environmental themes in the genre of speculative fiction.
