Bunbury Herald

Police are urging women to remember life is precious and to be vigilant on the streets at night.

Following the recent murder of Jill Meagher in Melbourne after she walking home alone, Bunbury acting Sen. Sgt Phil Nation said people had to be careful.

‘‘Statistically, we have good behaviourin the CBD streets at night,’’ he said.

‘‘But we do look at behaviour on the streets, especially on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, when we have a strong presencein theCBD.

‘‘We have high visibility patrols targeting anti-social behaviour.’’

Acting Sen. Sgt Nation said women needed to be aware of their of surroundings when out at night.

‘‘If you go out with a group, stay with them and keep in contact with your friends,’’ he said.

‘‘Phone up and let people know where you are and where you’re going.

‘‘These are things that people take for granted, which can make them more vulnerable.’’

He said the use of CCTV and good lighting in Bunbury helped limited anti-social behaviour in theCBD.

‘‘These devices don’t exclude everything, but they certainly help,’’ he said.

Acting Sen. Sgt Nation said Bunbury had not experienced any major incidents in the CBD for a while.

‘‘We do get some complaints, but no emergencies, which is fantastic,’’ he said.

‘‘Indecent and sexual assaults are very limited.’’
