Belles ring for new members

Bunbury Herald

The CWA Southern Belles will hold a new members’ picnic at the Donnybrook Fun Park at 10am this Saturday, March 23.

The morning is especially for potential new members to come down and find out more about what the Southern Belles is all about.

CWA Southern Belles president Rebecca Corps said it was an opportunity to come down and relax for a few hours, and to meet some other women in the South West.

“Everyone is welcome, and it’s a chance to come down and meet some of the existing members of CWA Southern Belles,” she said.

“It will be a relaxed morning and people can come down for as long as they want.

“Bring your friends, bring your kids – and bring a plate of food to share."

The CWA Southern Belles started back in 2009 as part of a revival by younger women of the traditional Country Women’s Association – but with a twist.

Taking its cue from the Perth CWA Belles – who described their interests as baking, literature and rock ‘n roll – the group started at looking at ways to modernise the CWA, while still staying true to its 80-year-old ethos.

Juggling work, study and young families, the ladies meet in the evening and nearly all events are held on the weekend.

Mrs Corps said while the CWA Southern Belles was typically a younger branch of the CWA, age was not an issue.

“The group is really about offering friendship to other women living in the South West, raising funds for worthy causes and making sure the time-honoured traditions of the CWA don’t die out,” she said.
