Black Sabbath as Beavers crush Marists

George Goodwin, BUNBURY HERALDBunbury Herald

Sunday was God’s day of rest after creating the world but on Bunbury’s cricket ovals it was all activity with the highlight centuries by adopted Australians from a far off land in Africa.

The African connection came in the form of Zimbabwean WA Country XI all-rounder Ross Knoll and former Zimbabwe test gun Murray Goodwin who both bagged hundreds for their respective LGM Industries major league clubs, Knoll against Leschenault and Goodwin against Dalyellup Beach.

Sunday was good for Eaton and Colts with the Beavers gaining revenge over Marist and Colts turning the tables on Dalyellup Beach.

The weekend was not so kind to the league-leading Settlers who suffered two losses after dropping six catches on Saturday and a further four on Sunday, including big gun Goodwin who made sure Dalyellup Beach paid for their mistakes.

Where wins would have ensured the Settlers a stranglehold on the Bunbury and Districts First Grade ladder, instead Dalyellup Beach has fallen back to the chasing pack, now just three points ahead of Hay Park and Eaton.

Backing Goodwin’s timely 96-ball 107 with 13 boundaries was Cruize Ciallella (41) and a swashbuckling Clayton Caltsounis cameo of three sixes taking Colts to 248 off their 50 overs at Dalyellup College Oval.

Former captain Ben Lagana, Dillon Watson and Mat Fink kept the Settlers top order in the hunt in spite of the absence of high scorers Tim Cooper and Corey Fagan.

But as the bowling tightened the run rate dropped with the Settlers falling 36 runs short of their target.

The Sabbath was a black day for Marist who crashed to a vengeful Eaton Beavers.

Blues paceman Matt Anderson reduced Eaton to 5-85 before bowlers Stuart Clark (52) and Steve Barron (39) came to the party to help their side post a competitive 202 run total.

A concerted attack from the five bowlers used by Beavers skipper Clint Hewson kept the Blues in check and Marist ended its chase 75 runs in arrears despite youngster Harry Creasey carving out his maiden major league half century.

At Hay Park Leschenault were stinging from the Redbacks bite with top dog Ross Knoll stroking 14 boundaries in a century to spearhead his side to 8-234 before dismissing the Green Caps for 111, Nicholas Webb top scoring with 35.
