Boomers bounce to top with win

DARREL COCKRAMBunbury Herald

The Eaton Boomers were all class at Glen Huon Reserve on Sunday where they outscored Augusta-Margaret River by 135 points in a 27.16 (178) to 6.7 (43) thumping.

From the opening bounce the Boomers were first to the ball and their speed and skill saw them win almost every contest.

Their use of the handball saw them set up play by putting players in the clear and rarely did more than one handpass go backwards.

Any time a Boomer was in trouble there were one or two teammates running past and the goals flowed.

Chris Atthowe slotted a couple from outside fifty before spending most of the game driving the ball forwards from half back, Matt Buchanan slipped in for a couple while half back Blake Piggott kicked the first of his two for the day after a chain of passes down the ground.

Early in the second term Leigh Kelly kicked his first goal for the day and with the Boomers leaving the forward line open he finished with 10.1 for the day with all of his majors coming from strong overhead marks or marks on the lead.

Despite the one-sided nature of the game the Hawks were able to maintain effort and enthusiasm with the minor consolation of four last quarter goals.

Seventeen year old Jake Rodgers impressed with three goals and strong play in the middle of the ground while Asher Samelko was strong in the ruck.

Key player Hamish Shepheard began in the forward line where he was out of the play but found plenty of the ball when moved onto the ball.

Emerging forward Denhlam King continued his good form with three goals and a number of score involvements.

On reflection the Boomers brand of football was above the level of 2013 and one wonders what they will achieve when six of the top twenty two players come back into the side some time after the bye.

The massive victory margin means Eaton leapfrogs Bunbury into first on the Dale Alcock Homes SWFL ladder.
