Bridging the cultural gap

Bunbury Herald

Aboriginal films which might otherwise bypass Bunbury and the South West will be on show at Edith Cowan University during NAIDOC week.

During thepast 18 months disability services organisation Enable Southwest has worked with South West Noongar groups to access and promote a sample of exciting and internationally recognised Aboriginal film and theatre productions.

Dr Mary Bastable said Enable’s intention was to bring cultural competence learning events to the South West which help bridge the cultural gap.

‘‘Sharing these cultural competence learning events helps us get to know each other,’’ Dr Bastable said.

Ernie Hill said the benefit for Aboriginal youth in identifying and connecting with the creative energy of these productions had been proven.

The two films are Liyarn Ngarn, powerful WA stories from Perth to Fitzroy Crossing about lasting reconciliation and Our Generation, an award-winning documentary which takes an unflinching look at issues in North East Arnhem Land.

The NAIDOC week movie screenings will be at ECU Building 6 from July 4 to 5.
