Budding archers right on target

Five emerging archers proved Bunbury is still a bullseye for the sport in WA, after some impressive performances at a competition in Perth.

Bunbury Archery Club members Lisa Cousens, Jaimi Wright, Caroline Lefebvre, Liz Bell and Tim Dyson all returned from the Fletchlings Tournament in Perth last month with medals.

The shoot, for people who have not entered a tournament before, was held on November 18.

Bunbury Archery Club head coach Coral Dandridge said the group’s results had been a proud moment for the organisation.

“They’ve all come through my coaching course and the results were just tremendous for them,” she said.

“For most of them, it was their first tournament.”

For Cousens, archery is a family affair.

“My whole family is involved. They came down here every Sunday,” she said.

“We have competitions. It’s a good talking point among family.

“There is a lot of skill involved. You have to be precise.”

Wright joined the club in March.

“It’s good if you don’t really like the high-octane sports,” she said.

“It’s good if you want to let it all out for a bit.”

Cousens, Wright, Lefebvre and Dyson all won gold medals, while Bell also performed well to win a bronze.

The results signalled a return to glory for the Bunbury Archery Club, which did not send any shooters to the Fletchlings Tournament last year.

“We didn’t have anybody that hadn’t been in tournaments – we didn’t have any fletchlings,” Dandridge said.

“But the year before, we sent up exactly the same amount of people and came back with exactly the same medals.”
