Bullets fire a big first shot
Busselton Bullets started the 2014-15 Dale Alcock Homes Bunbury Basketball Association A-Grade season in the best way possible, knocking off three-time defending champions Aces Navy 78-71 on Friday night.
Point guard Damien Lee began the new season in great form, nailing 22 points in a dominant offensive display. Lee was backed up by big man Adam Dehring (18 points) and Goldfields Giants 250 game player Todd Earle who scored 15 points in a surprise appearance.
Navy were led by Slammers guards Wade Hitchcock with 20 points and Josh Weir (16 points).
Tornadoes Black put out a warning to the rest of the league that they will be a handful this season, thrashing Aces White 83-41 while missing last year’s league MVP Jason Smith and his brother Ryan.
Black were led by their two 19-year-old guards Carey Watkins (24 points) and Brendon Canzirri (15 points) in a good sign for their future, while Nat van Dijk added 14 points.
Aaron Edwards (12 points) and Josh England (11 points) led White for the evening, who are missing Slammers legend Lee Smith for a few months after having surgery on his arm.
Bulls Gold started the season off with a 58-54 victory over Tornadoes Red, with Brynn Francis top scoring with 18 points for the winning side.
Gold, who were missing Clive Weeden, had Cohen Thompson and Cameron Bell score 12 and 10 points, respectively, in their A-Grade debuts.
Red were led by Brandon Bennell’s 16-point haul, with Bree Dudek chipping in 11 points.
In the Women’s games, Bulls started their season off with a 55-44 win over Aces White, with Keryn McGregor top scoring with 16 points.
Tornadoes started their season off with a 71-51 win over Aces Blue, with Rhyse Marsh scoring 14 for the winners.
