Bumper field for Speedway finale

Over 50 cars attended the final night of racing at Quit Bunbury Speedway on Saturday which saw five different racing divisions represented including junior sedans, street stocks and production sedans.

Late Models and Limited Sprints were also represented, although only in small numbers.

The running of the annual Stingaz Junior Sedan Cup was a highlight, with speedway clubs from both Collie and Manjimup represented, the latter well served by none other than recently crowned WA champion Drew Ogle, who dominated the night’s racing.

Ogle won all of the heats as well as the pole shuffle to earn himself a front row start with the feature a mere formality as he ran away with the race in sensational fashion.

The street stocks arrived in droves, so many in fact that the field had to be divided into two.

Barry Rewell was sensational all night until the third heat saw him careen off the main straight after contact with another car. The final was a tough affair with another South West ace in Wayne Thomson taking out the feature event.

Michael Hamon continued his run of success in the production sedan division. After taking third place at the Australian Championship at Gympie in Queensland last weekend, Hamon had a perfect run, winning all three of his heats and leading the A-Main feature from start to finish.

Bunbury Speedway general manager Andrew Roberts said the night was a great success.

“To have the turnout we did for an event this late in the season is very impressive, ” he said.

“We’re glad the competitors came out in numbers to support it.”

Saturday’s race meet winds up a very busy season for the venue with the team already starting work on its 2014-15 calendar.

With massive events including the 2015 Australian Sprintcar Championship and the annual Quit Krikke Boys Shootout locked in, race fans are already looking forward to an action-packed season beginning in October.
