Two Bunbury Primary School students have ranked in the top 1% of all students in a test designed to challenge high achievers.

Year 2 student Jasper Steele and Year 4 India Nixon had success in the maths and English categories of the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools test.

"The reason we do the test is to give children an academic challenge and the opportunity to do that is very important," the school's associate principal Adriana Palermo said.

"It's a level of assessment higher than NAPLAN and you have to be very good academically to succeed.

"It's voluntary to enter and anyone can have a go but kids come out and say 'that was very tough'.

"To get results like our kids are getting is outstanding."

Bunbury Primary School had 94 students between Years 2 and 6 participate in the maths test, more than double last year's figure of 45 despite not having Year 7 students this year.

There were also 80 students in the English test and 48 for spelling.

India, who considers herself a keen reader, said she "trembled" when she found out about her success.

"I was actually quite amazed because I didn't expect to get such a high result," she said.
