Bunbury students present to the world

Bunbury Herald

Some of Newton Moore Senior High School’s brightest minds recently made a presentation at a national student conference in Melbourne.

Students from Years 10 and 11 were chosen to attend the Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids conference, where they made a presentation about plastic in the waterways.

The students’ presentation mentioned a machine they built to turn plastics into oil.

The machine — for which the school received $10,000 in funding from BP last month —is still being tested to see which types of plastic create the least amount of fumes and better quality oil.

Year 10 student Madeleine Lyon said the group was nervous before their presentation.

‘‘Our first presentation was live streamed so people who were overseas and couldn’t get there were able to see it as well,’’ she said.

The students had to battle with technology as their microphones were sensitive and the video they had prepared wouldn’t work.

They also listened to other workshops about problems with Australia’s waterways.

‘‘There were lots of different topics, but it was all about water,’’ Madeleine said.

The school group was one of more than 60 schools from around Australia chosen to attend the October 13-17 conference.
