Bunbury's young cooks get creative

JORDAN McARDLEBunbury Herald

Newton Moore Senior High School Year 8 students put their culinary skills to test during the school’s cooking competition last week.

Inspired by hit television show Masterchef, these budding cooks served up some scrumptious and original creations.

The students had an hour to prepare their scones and teacher Donelle McInerney was more than impressed with the final products.

‘‘It was an invention test so the children had to make some different things,’’ Mrs McInerney said.

‘‘We had everything from peanut butter scones to red scones which were a combination of red creaming soda and red berries.

‘‘There were some really fantastic creations from the students.’’

The Year 8s were judged by Mrs McInerney and fellow peers on the presentation and taste of their creations.

Mrs McInerney said cooking was an important skill to learn from an early age.

‘‘I think it’s important because it gives them the option of learning to cook for themselves and not having to rely on unhealthy takeaway foods,’’ she said.

‘‘The best thing is that the students enjoy what they cook and it also creates good teamwork.’’

Ben Offer and Ashley Cousins won the first prize for their banana and caramel flavoured scones which were a hit among the students.
