Busselton belt Hawks in final derby

JIM BUNBURYBunbury Herald

Kyle Hams orchestrated a finely tuned Magpies midfield and was duly awarded best afield after his side defeated Augusta-Margaret River by exactly 10 goals in the Busselton Toyota Cup at Gloucester Park on Saturday night.

Hams roamed the ground with carte blanche and repeatedly foiled the Hawks’ assaults alongside teammates Brent Snook, Aidan Fraser and captain Daniel McGinlay, who were pivotal in upsetting the Hawks 14.11 (95) to 5.5 (35).

The three players booted three goals each, while Lance Lucas stood staunch in defence for the Magpies.

Busselton opened the scoring when McGinlay swooped on an errant boundary hit out by Hawks ruckman Simon Andrijich and combined with Adam Booth to supply Snook with his first of three.

Aidan Fraser booted the next two for the Magpies, with Brayden Hoskins featuring in the first before Hams and Snook collaborated to provide Fraser his second for the term.

McGinlay chimed in with a blazing left foot snap before Tim Iaonnou bagged his first and Snook assisted in Hoskins’ goal that gave Busselton six majors to zip at quarter-time.

After the first change, Busselton’s carnage of Augusta-Margaret River and McGinlay’s liveliness continued as he provided Snook with his second and added another to his personal goal tally.

The Hawks eventually got off the deck late in the term when Andrijich, Richard Devitt, Maui Murphy and Tom McDonald strung together and delivered Liam Stephens their team’s long awaited first goal.

A light drizzle created slippery conditions in the third term that seemed to work in favour of the Hawks as they outscored Busselton four goals to two.

Hawk Hamish Shepheard and captain Ben Gerrans linked up to produce Mitch Payne’s first before Stephens booted his second for the night.

The Magpies replied with consecutive goals as McGinlay, this time with a right foot snap, kicked his third and Fraser followed when he suit intercepted a kick-in by the Hawks.

However, Augusta-Margaret River dictated the quarter with terrific teamwork that had so far been absent from their game.

From half back Hawks’ Mark Semini and Grant Garstone joined with defender Brodie Bramich who burst through the corridor punting the football over the top for Payne to run in and goal.

Asher Samelko supported Shepheard with a a great defencive effort allowing the playmaker to supply Andrijich who finished with the Hawks’ fifth goal of the term and last of the evening.

After the final change the Hawks appeared to have put the cue in the rack as Busselton steamrolled the home side kicking four goals to none.

Magpies Jon Meadmore and Iaonnou got Snook his third before Josh Hewett and Sean Trombetta impressed Busselton’s bench with a slick give and go act that resulted in a goal to Hewett.

Nathan Bradbury bagged the penultimate goal and then Meadmore spotted Iaonnou for his second which iced a resounding away win for the Magpies.
