Calendar puts SW shots in the frame

Fifteen South West residents will have their work featured in a calendar after winning a South West Development Commission photography contest.

Entrants were encouraged to take photographs capturing what it was like to live, work and play in the South West.

Sharyn George from Millbridge stumbled across her winning photo opportunity by chance, snapping a colourful shot of the Viva Bunbury parade while watching the Edith Cowan University graduation parade.

"I'm always taking pictures of things," she said.

Bunbury resident Andrea Hodgson's winning photo was of Bunbury running group Freerun X5 outside Bunbury Tower.

Ms Hodgson described photography as a "real passion but only a hobby" that she started about three years ago after an introductory course.

She has been a finalist in a Setagaya sister city photography competition and was "very excited" about seeing her work in the calendar.

After initially planning to award 13 photographs, SWDC chief executive Don Punch said the quality of entrants encouraged judges to add extra prizes.

"We received more than 100 entries from around the South West and thank everyone," he said.

"With so many eye-catching shots, we decided to give out two more prizes than we had originally planned in order to reward more people who took the time to capture on camera the spirit of the South West."

All 15 winning photos will feature in the calendar to be released later this year and the photographers also receive an autographed copy of the film _Drift _.
