CBD strip upgrades start in Bunbury

Bunbury Herald

Work has started on upgrading the Victoria Street cafe strip to improve paving, access to buildings and pedestrian safety.

Red brick pavers will be replaced with urban stone pavers which are consistent with street scaping works already completed in other parts of Victoria Street.

The cafe strip will be closed to traffic for two weeks while the work takes place, but pedestrians will still be able to access all businesses which remain open.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of July.

City of Bunbury programs and projects team leader Ian Browning said improving accessibility in Victoria Street was a major focus of the upgrade.

“In particular for wheelchairs and prams, so people can access an increased number of businesses along this section of Victoria Street more easily,” he said.

Bunbury Mayor David Smith said the upgrade would also have significant flow-on benefits to businesses.

“Not only could this increase the number of people entering local shops, there is every chance the works could increase alfresco and street entertainment opportunities,” he said.

“That in turn will attract more day trippers from Perth and the region.”
