China Blue Experiment at the Prince

CLARE NEGUSBunbury Herald

Singer-songwriter Darren Forster, also known as China Blue, is ready to unleash his ‘‘bluesy-pop’’ on the world.

The Perth-based musician is heading to Bunbury with the rest of The China Blue Experiment for the band’s South West EP launch at the Prince of Wales Hotel.

Having played in Bunbury in the past, Forster said he was excited to bring his ‘‘ever-evolving sound’’ back to one of his favourite venues.

‘‘We’re really looking forward to letting our hair down at the Prince,’’ Forster said.

‘‘It is like our home away from home.

‘‘Our first launch will be more serious with industry types so the Prince will be more relaxed.’’

The band will launch their first EP Shades of Night at Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle this Saturday night, after 18 months of recording, before heading south.

Forster describes the four-track release as bluesy-pop with a hint of country and said much of the music was recorded while he wasworking at his fly-in-fly-out mining job.

The name China Blue Experiment originated from the saying ‘‘china plate’’ which is cockney slang for ‘‘mate’’ and evolved when Forster teamed up with fellow Perth musicians and regulars Gordon Cant and Julien Zannin.

While Shades of Night was being produced and mastered, The China Blue Experiment was playing to sellout crowds in venues acrossWA including The Ellington Jazz Club, Settlers Tavern, Mojo’s and Ocean One Bar.

Forster said the Bunbury show would be heavy on improvisation and would take the audience on an emotionally charged but uplifting ride.

The band has enlisted the help of roots guru and friend Simon Kelly for their Bunbury show.

The China Blue Experiment will play at The Prince of Wales Hotel on Friday night.
