Students at Cooinda Primary School now have the opportunity to play and learn on a nature playground thanks to parents, school staff and businesses from the Bunbury area.

Businesses and parents got involved with the school earlier this year to build a playground which would change the way students play and have them interact in a different environment.

More than 30 businesses got involved in the project, with many of them working on the weekends to build numerous features including a pirate ship, play hill, man built streams and other nature-based play activities.

Teacher Lauren Smith said the project had been running since March and would continue to evolve.

“The current play area needed an upgrade so we decided to build something which would provide more exciting and adventurous play for the children, ” she said.

“The difference in play and behaviour by the students has been noted with many solving problems by themselves easier and multiple age groups playing together.

“It has been amazing to have such great community spirit with the project.”

On Thursday the school hosted a morning tea for the businesses and volunteers who donated their time and resources to the project.

The students enjoyed an extended playtime to show off their new equipment.
