Cyclist assaulted near Bunbury beach

TARI JEFFERSBunbury Herald

Police are speaking to a person of interest in relation to an assault on a cyclist on Friday morning.

The 42-year-old was cycling along Ocean Drive near Maidens Beach about 8am when he was approached by the driver of a red Ford sedan.

Bunbury Sgt Phil Nation said there was a verbal altercation before the driver was believed to have blocked the cyclist’s path with his car.

``The cyclist and the driver are not believed to have been known to each other before this incident,’’ he said.

It is believed the driver pulled a wooden pole from his car and hit the cyclist before he got back in his car and drove it towards the cyclist.

The cyclist defended himself and found cover at a nearby light pole.

``The cyclist is okay,’’ Sgt Nation said.

Police are conducting enquiries into the assault and are calling on witnesses to come forward.

Anyone who saw the assault is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
