Daniel's ‘steam punk’ revelations

Bunbury Herald

Technology and nature are juxtaposed in sculptor Daniel Fisher’s Revelations exhibition which features impressive pieces constructed from recycled materials.

The exhibition will run at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries until September and includes bold and stimulating creations using bones, steel, leather, nuts, bolts and a myriad other odd materials.

Viewers will be greeted by a 10-foot mechanical dinosaur while a life-size tree installation and a robotic boy make up the exhibition’s centrepieces.

The Busselton artist has crafted this variety of ‘‘steam punk’’ inspired creatures out of an appreciation for the natural ‘‘evolution’’ of a sculpture.

Steam punk is a literary genre that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th Century.

The ‘‘steam’’ refers to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and the ‘‘punk’’ refers to rebellion.

‘‘I spent the last year building sculptures with no consideration as to whether they would sell or be liked,’’ Mr Fisher said.

‘‘The result is, I hope, a pure and unique exhibition which words alone can’t do justice — you have to come see for yourself.’’

The young artist was selected from a number of applicants to be the featured artist of the 2011 South West Showcase, a supported program which aims to assist South West artists by exhibiting their work at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.

MrFisher will also present workshops as part of the BRAG Arts Access Programme.

Revelations will run until September 18.
