Dawn dwarfs port residents

ADAM ORLANDOBunbury Herald

The Dawn Princess cruise ship docked in Bunbury Port on Thursday with about 2000 tourists disembarking the massive vessel, injecting an estimated $400,000 into the local economy.

It was the second cruise ship visit of the season and the first time the Marlston Markets had been in operation during a cruise ship’s stopover.

Based in Australia year-round and using only Australian currency on board, the Dawn Princess was abuzz with activity, offering everything from live theatre and the big screen, to plush lounges, swanky casinos and dance clubs.

The ship has a Vista Show Lounge, offers movies under the stars in an outdoor theatre, and has chefs who insist on serving the fine cuisine.

The South West Development Commission’s Don Carlson, from the Bunbury Cruise Ship Committee, said each cruise ship visit creates economic benefits for Bunbury and the surrounding areas, with an estimated $200 being spent by each passenger.

‘‘Cruise ship visits give passengers a taste of what Bunbury has to offer, encouraging people to return with friends and family to explore the area in more depth,’’ he said.

‘‘The markets, located near the visitor centre, were a success and helped create a welcoming atmosphere for the cruise ship passengers, with about 80 stalls and musical acts keeping people entertained.’’

Mr Carlson said the markets and tourism centre became a hub for passengers starting out their day, with people either choosing to stay in town or go on a short tour to nearby areas.

The next cruise ship will sail into Bunbury on Australia Day, which Mr Carlson said was a real coup for Bunbury.
