DeepBlue break the rules

CLARE NEGUSBunbury Herald

The energetic and emotive DeepBlue orchestra wants to find out ‘‘who are you?’’ when it drops into Bunbury this Friday.

Dynamic and engaging with dancing musicians and circus tricks — DeepBlue is no traditional orchestra.

Violinist Greta Coolly told the Herald the orchestra wanted the audience to react to the show’s song list.

‘‘We have a mobile web app which people can send their comments and thoughts,’’ Coolly said.

‘‘It’s a bit unusual but we are trying to find out more about the Bunbury audience through what we are playing and what memories the songs are evoking.

‘‘We feed this information back to them and they might find out a little more about their own town and the friends they go with to the show.’’

The musicians have rearranged a variety of songs — from Gotye’s mega hit Somebody That I Used To Know, to Radiohead’s Paranoid Android and The Easybeats’ Friday On My Mind.

Each of the orchestra’s songs was chosen to provoke responses from the audience.

‘‘The songs are ones which shaped our identity and affect our lives,’’ Coolly said.

DeepBlue marries the traditional string section of the orchestra with a fifth element — digital and electronics.

The cameras, big screens and dynamic lighting provide a rich mix of classical, pop and filmmusic with magnificent sound, light, images and stories that is sure to capture the imagination.

The orchestra will also engage Bunbury’s youth musicians and choirs in the YoungBlue workshops prior to the show.

‘‘It’s an extension of our community engagement program and a way to get to know locals better and involve them in the show,’’ Coolly said,

‘‘They come to the theatre on the day and work out moves and choreography and perform it on stage with us.’’

DeepBlue will bring the stage show ‘‘Who Are You’’ to the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre this Friday.
