Desex in the City's back!
Bunbury residents are being urged to take advantage of the city’s Desex in the City program which offers discounted sterilisation to cat owners.
Under the new State Cat Act to become law next year, all cats will be required to be sterilised except those with special breeding licenses.
During August, the City of Bunbury and Bunbury vets will offer residents cheap cat sterilisation and micro-chipping under the Desex in the City program.
The subsidised service means some residents can receive up to 90 per cent off the cost of sterilisation and micro-chipping.
Acting manager community law and safety Lewis Winter said the program had proved to be very worthwhile and last year 150 cats in Bunbury were sterilised by local veterinarians.
‘‘What this means in real terms is fewer kittens, but what we want is to continue reducing number of unsterilised cats,’’ Mr Winter said.
‘‘Unsterilised cats also contribute to the problem of overpopulation, leaving vets and welfare agencies to destroy thousands of excess cats each year.’’
Mr Winter said the City of Bunbury had to thank vets and animal agencies for supporting the program. Participating are Harradine and Associates Veterinary Hospital, McGregor Veterinary Clinic and Bunbury Veterinary Clinic.
