A P-plater who was allegedly driving at nearly 60kmh over the limit had his car impounded at the weekend.

The 17-year-old man was charged with reckless driving after he was detected allegedly travelling at 163kmh by a multanova on Old Coast Road near Binningup at 7.20pm on Saturday.

Australind Police then allegedly recorded him travelling at 139kmh in an 80kmh zone on the Australind Bypass.

Officers arrested him and impounded his car for 28 days under hoon legislation.

Police also allegedly discovered drug paraphernalia in the car.

Officer in charge at Australind Police Sen. Sgt Peter Hayes said the driver put himself, his three passengers and other road users in danger.

“To detect a driver with less than 10 months experience travelling at these speeds, placing himself, three other friends and all road users at serious risk of death or serious injury is extremely disappointing and totally irresponsible, ” he said.

Sen. Sgt Hayes warned drivers that police would target speeding and other traffic offences over the Easter long weekend.

“Significant resources are deployed to catch these types of drivers and that effort will be enhanced over the coming days in the lead up to Easter, ” he said.
