‘Dune Dudes’ join beach clean-up

Bunbury Herald

Parkfield Primary School’s Dune Dude program joined forces with the Binningup Coastal Care and Environment Group and the South West Catchments Council to plant trees and pick up rubbish along the Binningup dunes and beach last week.

‘‘It was fun, it was good to see how much rubbish we picked up,’’ Sophie Murfit said.

‘‘We filled up a big bag—mostly fishing stuff, beer bottles and rope,’’ Quinn Morey said.

Catchment council spokesman Chris Gibbs said Parkfield Primary had been a ‘‘lighthouse school’’ and set the bar for environmental programs.

‘‘It is an outstanding school, all year groups have environmental excursions, they monitor the Collie and Brunswick rivers and plant trees in Crooked Brook,’’ Mr Gibbs said.

‘‘It is a great school to work with as they tackle any challenge.’’

The Dune Dudes program has been a great success for the council since it started a few years ago.

‘‘We work on on-ground projects with the schools and help them get out with coast-care groups,’’ Blair Darvill said.

The seedlings planted by the students to aid the dunes, which have recently taken a battering from the weather, were donated by the Shire of Harvey and the council.

Parkfield Primary teacher Karl Moll said it was fantastic to see the students involved in cleaning up the environment.
